Playing Up an Age Group – What You Need to Know

At Sharks Basketball Club, our mission is to foster player development while maintaining team balance, fair competition, and strong club values. One area where these principles come into play is when players request to play out of their designated age group.
Our club policy is that all players must play in their nominated age group first. Playing in an older age group is by invitation only and will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
Why is this our policy?
While some players may feel ready to move up, we need to ensure that decisions are made with both individual and club needs in mind. Here’s what we consider:
🏀 Skill Level & Physical Readiness – Does the player have the skills, experience, and physical ability to safely compete in a higher age group?
🏀 Team Balance & Availability – Will moving this player up leave gaps in their current age group, or will it create uneven team numbers?
🏀 Player Pathway & Long-Term Development – Does this move contribute positively to the player’s basketball journey?
🏀 Social & Emotional Readiness – Can the player handle the competitive and social aspects of playing with older teammates?
🏀 Coach & Club Recommendations – Has the player’s current or previous coach provided feedback supporting the move?
🏀 Competition Structure & Fairness – Will this change comply with league rules and maintain fairness across the competition?
How to Request an Exemption
📩 All requests must be submitted via email before team selection. If you wish to apply for an exemption, please email geelongsharks@gmail.com.
🚨 Important: After teams are finalised, movement opportunities will be limited.
While we want to see all our players thrive, we must also ensure fairness, team balance, and a structured pathway for development. We appreciate your understanding and support in keeping Sharks Basketball strong and inclusive.
